North East Lincolnshire Council has released a statement regarding concerns raised over the width of the highway in Seaview Street, Cleethorpes.
Here it is in full:
As the Seaview Street element of the Cleethorpes Regeneration Program nears completion questions have been raised about the highway width.
This very popular street, built in Victorian times, had varying widths along its length and very narrow footpaths at various locations.
The existing building lines of the commercial premises are not parallel, so careful consideration of the new road layout and footpaths were at the forefront of the design.
The highway widths are now consistent along the full length at 2.55m determined by current best practices for highway design and road safety standards.
The council have evidenced that the road width is slightly wider than the previous road, but importantly the foot paths are not less than 1.5m wide along its length which creates a more pedestrian friendly area, and is much safer for those with mobility scooters or pushchairs.
However, it is acknowledged that the white line that runs parallel with the parking bays, requires repositioning, as it causes mounting of the footpath and haphazard car parking.
Seaview Street always needed vehicular due care and attention while driving along the narrow street.
Therefore it may be difficult to believe the repositioning of the white line will alleviate concerns raised, and in that regard the council will monitor the situation carefully, to ensure the project meets expectations, delivering a high specification project for future generations to enjoy.
