Last year, councillors agreed to launch a community lottery in North East Lincolnshire to support local good causes.
The new Lottery, “The Winsby Community Lottery”, is due to be launched in the Spring, with tickets costing £1. Of that, 60p will go towards local good causes, compared to just 28p in the pound for the National Lottery.
The call is now out for local good causes to sign up to benefit from the Winsby Community Lottery. These could be charities, voluntary organisations and any other good causes that work in the area.
Due to the ongoing Covid pandemic, the launch to potential good causes will take place virtually on 9 February. Any organisation can sign up for this at [Local Lottery Good Causes Launch Event Tickets, Tue 9 Feb 2021 at 13:30 | Eventbrite].
Cllr Stan Shreeve, Cabinet member for finance at North East Lincolnshire Council, encouraged leaders of good causes to sign up to benefit from the lottery, saying: “This is a really exciting day because it’s all about charities, the voluntary sector and not-for-profit organisations, and trying to support the North East Lincolnshire community.”
For each £1 spent with the Lottery, North East Lincolnshire based good causes who register with the lottery website will receive 50p in every pound spent by players who choose to contribute directly to them.
A further 10p in every pound will go into a general Winsby Lottery good causes fund. The remaining 40p in the pound is put towards prizes and operating costs.
Players who do not wish to support a specific cause can still take part in the online Lottery, with 60p of their ticket price going into the general good causes fund, which will be distributed by a panel brought together for that purpose.
The draw will be weekly with a jackpot of £25,000 for a matching sequence of six numbers, other prizes being £2,000, £250, £25 or three free tickets. The lottery website will be available from 9 February for good causes to sign up, but tickets will not be available for purchase until the formal launch of the lottery in March.
The lottery is being run by North East Lincolnshire Council in conjunction with Gatherwell, who have set up similar lotteries around the country.
