North East Lincolnshire Council’s Cabinet has this week accepted additional funding of £462,000 from the Department for Transport to continue the work improving sustainable travel across the area.
The council has also committed an additional £264,000 as part of the cash boost for the project. The funding will allow a number of projects to continue for the next year with the aims to:
- Ease access for local communities to travel to areas of employment
- Improve access to education, training and employment opportunities
- Improve road safety for cyclists and pedestrians
- Improve health and wellbeing through cycling and walking
- Reduce carbon emissions across North East Lincolnshire
- Reduce traffic congestion levels across North East Lincolnshire
- Widen opportunities to access sustainable travel in the borough
Councillor Stewart Swinburn, portfolio holder for environment and transport, said: “Since 2017, when the council initially secured £1.4 million of funding to improve sustainable travel, much work has taken place in our communities and with businesses to enable and improve sustainable travel in North East Lincolnshire.
“Over the coming year, with this additional funding, we will be able to explore the options of introducing a new bus service or enhancing the number 5 service to serve the residents of Habrough. This would better connect transport users with the new hourly Habrough TransPennine Express train stop.
“The cash will also help us continue our existing initiatives to educate and promote sustainable travel options to residents and businesses of North East Lincolnshire.”
