Work is due to start on the demolition of the former nightclub on Sea Road next week on Tuesday 24 March ahead of the construction of a new building as part of the wider regeneration of Cleethorpes.
As previously reported, the former Waves nightclub, adjacent toilet block and the small kiosk will be pulled down to make way for a new building that will house commercial space as well as visitor facilities, modern toilets and a Changing Places facility beach safety and tourist information services.
The building, which is fit for the modern age but reflects Cleethorpes’ Art Deco past, will replace the former venue, along with the boat house that was used by the Beach Safety team and the public toilets. The public toilets will remain open until after the 2020 summer season, with demolition work taking place on the rest of the site.
Soft market testing is underway to determine the best use of the commercial space in the building.
As part of the works, a small events space will also be created within Pier Gardens as part of the development.
Works already underway include the removal of the central reservation and re-laying of the footway in Sea Road.
This ambitious project is being supported by £1m funding from the Local Growth Fund, secured by the Humber LEP as part of the Government’s commitment to the Northern Powerhouse, with the remainder from the Council’s capital and Local Transport Plan funds.
The outline plans for the new building were approved at the Cabinet meeting in December last year. Since then, further detailed designs for the new build have been completed, and are now in the planning system.
Cllr John Fenty, Cabinet member for regeneration, said: “We have been doing a lot of work in Cleethorpes, securing millions of pounds of external funding to help improve the resort for the benefit of visitors, local people and businesses alike. I’m pleased we’ve got to the next stage of the works for the Sea Road development. The existing building is currently an eyesore, and it will be good to have it replaced with such an iconic building in such a prominent position.”
Lord Haskins, Chair of the Humber LEP, said: “We’re pleased to see work continue on the next phase of this project, which has been supported by £1m from the Local Growth Fund. This work will help to enhance the seafront in Cleethorpes, which is already an attractive tourist destination, and encourage even more visitors to enjoy a trip to the town.”
The demolition of the existing main building will start early March with hoardings erected around the site for the full period of the works, including the construction of the new building.
This work comes as part of the Cleethorpes Regeneration Programme which includes major regeneration and heritage projects currently planned or underway in the resort, supported by central government’s Coastal Communities Fund, the National Lottery Heritage Fund and the Humber Local Enterprise Partnership.
