Following increased reports of vehicles mounting the kerb to park fully on the footpaths and a number of near misses around Osborne Street and East St Mary’s Gate junction in Grimsby town centre, a number of bollards are due to be installed this week.
Dependent on the contractor’s availability, works will take place between Wednesday 10 March and Friday 12 March. No traffic management will be required during the works, which will be completed on the footpath, with cones and barriers in place around the working area.
Councillor Stewart Swinburn, portfolio holder for environment and transport, said: “We’re responding to increasing reports of near misses and concerns for pedestrian safety at this busy point as we continue to see more and more vehicles parking here illegally.
“Installing these bollards aims to remove the opportunity for vehicles to park here, ensuring the safety of pedestrians but also reducing the chance of footpaths in the area becoming damaged.
“Alongside this issue, we are also concerned about people driving within the pedestrian area of Victoria Street and are working closely with Humberside Police to find a solution for how this can be tackled.”
Highway officials will continue to monitor the area following the introduction of the bollards and ensure the safety concerns are addressed.
North East Lincolnshire Council’s regeneration partner, ENGIE, will manage and oversee the installation with contractor, Southam Services (Lincs) Ltd, carrying out the works.
