Last night the Festival of the Sky launched in Cleethorpes with an amazing immersive display of fire at the Discovery Centre.
The festival is a weekend-long celebration of arts and culture in the resort.
Councillor Philip Jackson, leader of NELC, said: “Whether you live locally, or have come from outside of North East Lincolnshire, you’ll see there’s currently lots of work happening in Cleethorpes, funded from sources like the Coastal Communities Fund, the National Lottery Heritage Fund and the Local Enterprise Partnership.
Cleethorpes is the jewel in the crown of the east coast – and the jewel’s certainly getting a bit of a polish and makeover. There’s works everywhere in the resort, and more starting in the next few weeks. But, and there is a massive but here – those works are the result of hard work, of successfully securing external funding. And now, on the ground things are changing.
Cleethorpes has undoubtedly been enjoying a renaissance in recent years. The works currently underway will make it even more attractive to visitors and those who live here, and ultimately bring in more folks to spend their cash with local businesses.
When you’ve got a local businessman saying that the whole visual aspect of the High Street has changed for the good since we’ve finished the works, that he, and other traders, need to support the resort to make it a success, for me, that shows we’re doing something right.
And there’s more to come. Just look at the North Prom public art launch we did a couple of weeks ago. Whether you like it or not, art of whatever variety is a talking point, particularly when it’s a 72ft high White Palm. For those of you who are unaware, just Google White Palm Cleethorpes, and you’ll see what I mean!
Festivals like the one this weekend are key to showcasing our lovely resort. And for this one to be so good, with the quality entertainment planned, and it’s the first time it’s ever been put on, well, what can I say…
To say I have ‘sky high’ expectations for this festival would be an under-statement. But if you don’t reach for the sky, you’ll never find out what it feels like to get there. To finish, I’d just like to thank the organisers for pulling this fantastic event together.”
There is so much going on. Head to www.festivalofthesky.co.uk now – you really don’t want to miss put on this!
