North East Lincolnshire Council and its regeneration partner, ENGIE, has successfully secured £3million of Department for Transport funding to carry out repairs to Grimsby’s landmark Corporation Road bridge.
The Grade 2 listed 95-year old structure provides a vital link for residents and businesses in the centre of Grimsby.
The funding allows a number of major repairs to take place to strengthen the structure of the bridge and extends its lifespan.
The news follows a £93.4 million funding announcement by the Department for Transport today (Friday 28 February) that is being shared out to repair roads and bridges across 32 local authorities.
Councillor Stewart Swinburn, portfolio holder for environment and transport at North East Lincolnshire Council, said he was pleased with further investment into Grimsby Town Centre.
“I’m delighted to hear that our bid for Government funding has been successful,” he said. “It’s further proof of all the work we’re putting in to see our ambitions for the area coming to fruition.
“We’ll now be able to move forward with our plans to repair Corporation Road Bridge by appointing contractors and finalising details of the work, which we aim to start in 2021.
“The bridge is a strategic part of the highways network to keep traffic flowing and allow pedestrian and maritime access, this funding will enable us to secure the bridge’s long term future and enhance a key heritage asset within Grimsby’s Heritage Action Zone.”
Works are expected to start in 2021. North East Lincolnshire Council and its regeneration partner, ENGIE, will work closely with nearby businesses and residents to ensure disruption is kept to a minimum while these key improvement works take place.
