How are things written around Grimsby, what style of lettering catches your eye and are there logos or signs on buildings that mean something to you?
If so, get involved in #LettersFromGrimsby and inspire artist Adrian Riley as he helps to create a new feel and look to St James’ Square in art form, which everyone from the town can enjoy.
Adrian is working with Grimsby-based Our Big Picture. As part of its new ‘Our Haven’ project, it is responsible for bringing new artwork to the Square as part of its major refurbishment.
Adrian, hugely experienced in artistic signage and wayfinding, is one of two artists/designers commissioned to work on the creative side of the project, which is seeing the Square remodelled. Other work will be created by town artist Annabel McCourt.
And he wants people to help in this, the first of the Our Haven projects taking place as part of the St James’ Square arts community engagement programme. #LettersFromGrimsby sees Adrian on the hunt for the letters and typefaces of the town – be they on buildings, signs or at places you regularly visit.
“You may pass old stone carvings on your way to work, an interesting sign that makes you smile! Or a street sign that means something special to you. Just take a quick photograph of the letters and if there’s a story as to why you took the image that’s even better,” said Adrian.
Paula Denton, of Our Big Picture, said: “It’s time to get snapping and sending – what lettering makes our town?”

As reported, the Square, part of the Heritage Action Zone, is undergoing a £1.5m overhaul to create a family-friendly space with new furniture, planting, lighting and CCTV. Managed by North East Lincolnshire Council’s regeneration partner ENGIE, the main funding was secured by the Humber Local Enterprise Partnership (Humber LEP) as part of the Government’s commitment to the Northern Powerhouse.
Further monies from the Cultural Development Fund, (CDF), which is funded by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport and administered by Arts Council England was awarded to introduce creativity into the Square.
