The main works of the £2million B1444 Little Coates/Cambridge Road junction improvement scheme are now complete, and the new roundabout has been fully opened to traffic today.
We would like to thank residents and motorists for their patience and understanding during the works. The new larger roundabout can now accommodate an increased capacity in traffic so there will be less congestion in this area of town.
Cllr Stewart Swinburn, Cabinet member for highways, commented: “The previous smaller junction caused delays both on Little Coates Road and Cambridge Road, particularly at peak hours. These improvements are something that residents and businesses have called for over many years.
“The improved junction also supports the council’s vision for a community-focused neighbourhood development with 390 new homes on the former Western School site on Cambridge Road.
“I’m really pleased that these works are now substantially complete, and we’ve been able to open up the roundabout ahead of the festive period.”
The council is currently consulting on the housing project with local residents, who can give their views online at www.nelincs.gov.uk/have-your-say.
Some final works to the junction will be completed in the new year, including the reinstatement of the signalised crossing, the construction of the bus layby and landscaping, but these will impact on the highways in a much less visible way and the roundabout will remain open at all times.
The majority of the works have been funded through a £1.8m grant from the Greater Lincolnshire LEP, supplemented with funding from North East Lincolnshire Council.
