PM’s visit to Grimsby

Ward councillor for Immingham, Georgia Astbury, was among a handful of Conservative party members to meet Prime Minister Boris Johnson when he visited Grimsby last Thursday. Here, she recalls the experience in her own words…

“As a ward councillor, you don’t expect to be meeting the likes of the Prime Minister, so to have had that opportunity – and only 10 months after being elected – was a shock, and an honour, to say the least. It’s a great opportunity for us who live in the borough to promote the place we live. For me, I’m all about Immingham, so I made sure Boris knew who I was and where I was from when I spoke to him.

“Honestly, he was exactly how I expected. Very chatty, happy to talk to people. He gave a brilliant speech about Levelling Up and closing the gap between Greater Lincolnshire and other counties, stressing the importance of places like North East Lincolnshire.

“It was clear in his speech that the place we all live is a priority for this Government, and that Greater Lincolnshire deserves investment to give its people the best opportunities and to make their towns and villages even better places to live!

“Travelling up here and engaging with communities, local leaders, and businesses demonstrates the Prime Minister’s and the wider Government’s dedication to places like North East Lincolnshire. It is key that, now the Levelling Up White Paper is out, places like Grimsby, Immingham and Cleethorpes see the investment they require, and are allowed to grow and flourish like I expect they will in the coming years.”

The Prime Minster’s visit came on the same day that Coun Marian Boyd was elected to represent the Park Ward. Read more here.
