Clee Fields and the site of the former Scartho Swimming Pool have been earmarked for development and investment into community sporting facilities.
NELC’s Cabinet is being consulted about the locations, after the Planning Committee refused an expansion at Bradley Pitches for a second time.
Councillor Callum Proctor told a full meeting of NELC at Grimsby Town Hall that the two sites are outlined for development and investment in the council’s Playing Pitch Strategy.
He said: “We are conscious that there are many redundant playing facilities around the borough that have been forgotten and have become dilapidated. It is important we find ways to encourage people to be more healthy, taking part in sports activities.
“A key part of that is why we are looking at current playing provision across the borough. We need playing pitch provision to be accessible for the many, not the few.
“The previous proposals [for Bradley Pitches] heavily suited residents who can drive to Bradley Pitches, which in turn would create a huge congestion problem – unbearable for the residents living in that area.
“We need a strategy whereby everyone has good access to good leisure amenities. As such, officers are now consulting members of the Cabinet about bringing forward as soon as possible plans to develop alternative sites, namely Clee Fields playing field and land on Scartho Road adjacent to Barrett Recreation Ground, upon which the former Grimsby Swimming Pool was situated.
“The council is also in consultation with a range of agencies, including Sport England and national governing bodies, about the potential development of these sites to support our communities and to make the best of them in years to come.”
